As you travel the Internet looking for great deals on Pre-Owned Scientific Equipment and Instruments, beware of sites which list huge amounts of inventory. You will know these sites, because if you look for "centrifuges", for example, every centrifuge manufactured in the last 20 years will be listed in inventory! These "companies" (many times just individuals with a web site and nothing more) do not in reality have this equipment in inventory; if they did, there must be something wrong with their ability to sell their equipment! No, actually these "companies" have little or no real inventory, they rely on you calling and leaving your request, then they try to purchase the equipment from the handful of reputable dealers and resell it to you at an inflated price. Remember, it does not take much effort to create a web site (many times very impressive, with lots of fancy "fluff") where everything under the sun is listed as "inventory". Steer clear of these sites, they are likely to cost you money and time, neither of wich you have to spare! Agood defense against this type of marketing is to ask for a picture of the actual instrument you will receive. If they cannot supply this, or want to substitute a generic catalog photo, then they do not have the item.
